Since Oct. 9, 2009...

  • 247 Volunteers
  • 116 bags of trash
  • 174 bags of recycling

Semper Technology, Inc., is proud to be involved in this great community litter cleanup event.
Beginning with the first cleanup on October 3, 2009, a total of 247 volunteers at this semi-annual event have removed 116 bags of trash and 174 bags of recycling from our communities and watershed.

But this event is not just about picking-up litter, it's about bringing awareness to our growing litter problem as well as simple solutions to prevent litter, like:

  • Using a covered recycling tote to prevent light-weight recycling from blowing into the street or into the brush which typically happens when using the obsolete open-top tote.
  • Adopting simple lifestyle habits, like:
    • Choosing durable, reusable products instead of disposable.
    • Choosing reusable beverage containers instead of bottled water or other bottled drinks.
    • Choosing reusable bags instead of disposable ones.

Some interesting facts about previous Cascades Trash Bashes

October 30, 2011

Here is the photo slide show and the flyer from the October 30, 2011 Cascades Trash Bash, where we had 30 participants, including families with small children, teens, and several Scout troops. In 3½ hours, we collected an impressive 7 orange bags of trash and 24 blue bags of recycling, plus some other miscellaneous objects, like 4 car tires and a street sign. While participation was on the light side, perhaps due to the unusual snow shower the day before, the dedicated volunteers enjoyed a beautiful, sunny Fall day walking around and beautifying our community by ridding it of unsightly and harmful litter.

During the pre-cleanup time in the parking lot of our gracious host, Potomac Baptist Church, volunteers enjoyed refreshments generously provided by Giant Food (Cascades) and Semper Technology, Inc. and picked-up the ever-popular Cascades Trash Bash and Keep Loudoun Beautiful t-shirts. To encourage an eco-friendly lifestyle, volunteers were offered reusable bottles provided by Semper Technology, Inc.'s Shared Planet Solutions as well as practical reusable bags provided by Giant Food (Cascades) and the Cascades Green Team. We even collected the orange and banana peels for composting to demonstrate that you can have an event and still be environmentally responsible...and it's easy.

At the request of a scout leader, we even had a brief discussion regarding what happens to trash and recycling once picked-up from the curb since it is important that everybody, especially the young folks, understands that whatever we discard just doesn't disappear. It's either buried, burned, recycled, or becomes litter...all of which could be avoided if we simply reduce what we consume and adopt a reusable lifestyle.

To thank the volunteers for dedicating a few hours for their community, many, many great door prizes were given out courtesy of our faithful sponsors to wrap-up the pre-cleanup meeting.

Armed with orange & blue bags, gloves, safety vests, and litter-grabbing sticks, the enthusiastic trash-bashers thoroughly cleaned-up around Lowes Island and another team did a terrific job of cleaning-up the Sugarland Run floodplain under the Algonkian Parkway bridge.

April 3, 2011

Here is the photo slide show and the flyer from the April 3, 2011 Cascades Trash Bash, where we had 83 participants, including families with small children, teens, and several Scout troops. In 3½ hours, we collected an amazing 34 orange bags of trash and 51 blue bags of recycling, plus some other miscellaneous objects, like car tires and poles. We even reunited a stolen briefcase that was discovered in a stream with its owner. Many thanks to our faithful sponsors...

Let's face it, picking-up litter isn't very glamorous and it is easy to think of many other ways to spend an afternoon, so our sponsors go above and beyond to help to make it as fun, easy, and rewarding as possible with gift card door prizes, coupons, eco-friendly giveaways, refreshments, equipment, and services.
